As a fortified town, Muiden is located at a place where two water lines meet: the New Dutch Water Line from the Biesbosch and the Defence Line of Amsterdam around the capital. By opening locks and dikes, entire strips of land could be flooded until the beginning of the last century.
Even today you can see that Muiden was of great strategic importance. You can still find traces of this everywhere: the barracks in the centre, a network of forts and old underground storage areas under grassy hills.
